The Infamous “Just-Joking”-after-criticizing phenomena is used and abused by kids and adults alike.
Using these two words “Just Kidding” to excuse your bullying, is no excuse. It’s a cop-out, a way for people to be cruel and feel fine about it. There is NO excuse for being cruel.
Let me criticize you, belittle you, and then make it okay because I toss out two little words afterwards. This is a societal pink elephant in the room that needs to be addressed in schools, at home, and in the workplace. We typically don't address “Just Joking bullying” because we’ve all fallen prey to it. Our suggestion?
Make the bully think, “What’s Just Not Right?”
Your snarky remark to hurt my feelings is JUST NOT RIGHT.
What we need to get across to kids and adults alike is that making someone feel small does not make you big. All people need is a little validation in life. Retrain your brain to keep your ugly thoughts to yourself.
This phenomena has got to stop, in the workplace, in your home, in the classroom. Everyone, young and old has been guilty of it, some more than others, and some out right abuse it. Call them out that their Just Joking Bullying is Just Not Right.
When you react, they may throw it back at you with a, “geez, I was just kidding.” Let them know, throwing those words at the end of your nasty sentence does not make it acceptable.
The moral of this story? Stick up for yourself and be kind. Making someone feel good makes you a better person. Big hearts and happy spirits make a successful life.
